Aircrew module

Aircrew module
Kevlar® & carbon thermoset for maximum impact resistance and minimum weight.

Aircrew Module

Product requirements :

  • Ultra lightweight module for head up display on fighter pilot helmet.
  • Cranial area must be especially strong to withstand impacts.
  • Complex shape with very tight tolerances.
  • Smooth surface finish, no jagged edges.
  • Material must withstand further machining operations, to attach multiple items of equipment.

Solution :

A bladder moulded thermoset component utilising a variety of composite material types to provide strength, stiffness and resilience.

Kevlar® provides maximum impact protection at the lightest weight, however this material is difficult to cut. Therefore it was surrounded by carbon thermoset which allows full machining of apertures, flanges and final tolerances.

Thermoplastic wound gun barrel

Thermoplastic wound gun barrel
Fibres wound under tension around a thin steel liner to build in pre-stress with minimum weight.

Gun Barrel

Product requirements :

  • Weight is a critical issue with all man-portable equipment.
  • Reduce weight of gun barrel & mortar tubes whilst maintaining all operational parameters of existing steel tubes.

Solution :

A thin steel liner was overwrapped with a thermoplastic carbon composite, wound under tension. This provided a high compressive pre-stress to the liner. The result is a pressure vessel where the carbon is taking the majority of the working stresses and can operate continuously at 210°C.

Structural Yoke 1

Thermoset yoke for naval application
Full traceability programme including Certificate of Conformance.

Structural Yoke 2

Structural Yoke

Product requirements :

  • Lightweight yoke for supporting naval equipment.
  • High strength, to withstand severe shock loads and adverse environmental conditions.
  • Full quality programme and traceability at all points.

Solution :

A bladder moulded thermoset component, with a large number of mechanical fixings, mainly in aluminium. Product produced with ful defence traceability procedures, including certificate of conformance (C of C).

Missile fin

Thermoplastic missile fin
Thermoplastic stamping using carbon fibre PEEK.

Missile Fin

Product requirements :

  • Self opening, missile fin designed for active 120mm mortar, to replace existing titanium fin.
  • Lightweight, very stiff and very high strength, to withstand extreme loads.
  • Must withstand very large temperature extremes without suffering mechanical degradation.
  • Designed to last for up to 20 years with no maintenance.
  • Very high volume production.

Solution :

Thermoplastic stamping using carbon fibre PEEK. Stamping process allows high volume production with short cycle times.
